Alan Carr and
Dana Kilroy in 14/38 Starfish won the 2011 IDRA Northern Championships,
to take home the cup for the 3rd year in a row
to SDC. There were 4 races over 2 days (the 4th
and 5th of June). Light winds on the first day saw Frank Hamilton
and Jenny Byrne in 14/140 Dunmoanin from DMYC winning both
races, with 14/38 getting second place on both occasions.
The wind picked up on Saturday to force 4 gusting 5. In the
third race of the event, 14/38 finished first, 14/4 sailed
by Garry Sargent from CYBC finished second and 14/140 was
third. This put 14/38 and 14/140 drawn on 5 points each. The
final race was from Killowen point to Warenpoint, with a 3
mile downwind spinnaker leg and a long beat home. 14/38 finished
first ahead of 14/140 in this final race, placing 14/140 second
overall and 14/4 third. The Warrenpoint trophy went to Paddy
O’Kelly and John Ring from CYBC. This trophy goes to the best
placed boat in the fleet that was not in the first three in
any race. 2011 was the 15th anniversary of the
IDRA Northerns which have been hosted for the past decade
and a half by Carlingford Lough Yacht Club at Killowen point.
The class historian Ian Sargent made a presentation to officers
of CLYC to mark the occasion. They were given a hand crafted
model of an IDRA 14 made by Frank Hamilton from DYMC.
