The 2013 Mirror Easterns

The 2013 Mirror Easterns were held at the Royal Irish YC in Dun Laoghaire on the 4th and 5th of May. 19 boats took to the water in superb sailing conditions. In the end, Cian Hickey from Skerries and his crew, Caolan Croasdell from Lough Ree were victorious. Jack Maye and Sarah White from Sligo were second with Kerri-Ann Boylan and G Oconnor from Skerries in third place. Congratulations to Sutton Dinghy Club's Shane McLoughlin and Ben Jennings for their great improvement from last year finishing first in the silver fleet and sixth overall and also to to Sinead Dickson and Eve McMahon in securing seventh overall.

Sail Spree
2013

Our Sail Spree event in Sutton Dinghy Club last Saturday was a huge success. With the sun and a decent breeze almost 50 youths and juniors turned up to sample the delights of dinghy sailing in a combination of ISA Sail-fleet Topaz Uno's and our own Club Pico's.

The success of the event was in no small measure due to our club sailors and rescue drivers who volunteered to bring our guests out on the water. A big thank you to Ellen Harkin, Eanna Lawless, Callum Maher, Saoirse Kelly, Ciaran White, Rachel O'Connor, Tim Coyne, Darragh White, Ben Rock, Alannah Carroll McGeehan and Isobel McGrath. It was great to see so many kids on the water enjoying themselves.

Judging by the fact it took a while to get them off the water lets hope we have a few converts with the sailing bug. No doubt everyone enjoyed the BBQ afterwards. It was great to see former Commodore Muriel O'Tiarnaigh and her family down in the club to watch son Ruan back in a GP14 on Sutton Creek with Stephen Boyle.

The lads had a great blast in the wind and I am sure with the spinnaker held right into the Club line our Sail Spree visitors had a great view of the thrill to be had racing dinghies.

Much thanks to Mandy Kelly (JAO) for organising the day and the Sail-fleet from the ISA.

IDRA 14 NATIONAL CHAMIONSHIPS 2012

August 9th-11th, 2012

Four Sutton boats travelled to the IDRA 14 National Championships which
was held at Lough Erne Yacht Club in Enniskillen on August 9-11, 2012.
Defending champion Alan Henry and Simon Reville in 14 / 125, Slipstream,
finished in 2nd place, drawing on points with the first all-female team to
win the event, Julie Ascloop and Heather Keegan, in 14 / 143 from CYBC.
Former champion Alan Carr and Ian McCormack in 14 / 38, Starfish, got 3rd,
Jim Lambkin and Wendy Rudd in 14 / 1, Error, took 4th place and
Charles Sargent and John Lynch in 14 / 126 Smurfette finished in 13th place.
Gear failure hampered their performance. It was a very challenging event.
Races on August 9th were abandoned due to lack of wind.
Shifty light winds, force 1-2, on August 10th taxed the patience of many sailors.
The final day saw winds increase force 4-6 and gusty, with many capsizes.
The event was blessed with three days of unbroken sunshine,
ideal for camping, swimming, and relaxing outdoors after racing.
Thanks to all at LEYC for hosting such an enjoyable event.

presentation by Commodore of HYC, Gerry O'Neill

CY & BC Junior Regatta took place in difficult weather conditions. There were 17 boats from Sutton Dinghy Club and 10 from the National Yacht Club in DunLaoighre. The start had to be postponed a number of times to wait for lighter winds. This facilitated the visiting boats who were delayed getting across the bay. Hot soup rejuvenated the tired visitors and the the race got under way at 1.30pm. Race officer, Ian Sargent, set a course up to the Fairview end of the water from a committee boat. There were starts for 4.7, Radial and Pico; also Mirrors, Optimists and Toppers! Well done to everyone.
