SUTTON SAILORS TAKE FIRST PLACE AT MAJOR EVENTS

At the recent GP14 Leinster Championships held at Skerries Sailing Club on 28th & 29th June Hugh Gill with his son Daniel lifted the championshipafter 3 races on the Saturday with 2 race wins and an eight place. Racing on Sunday was abandoned due to dense fog. Two points behind, four other competitors tied for second place on equal points and had to use the tiebreaker to sort the placings. John Chambers and Conor Clancy took second place with former Irish champions Karl Jeffs and Jim Tootehill from the UK falling into third. This was a particularly satisfying win for the Gills as young Dan is the youngest ever winning crew for this championship at thirteen years of age. Definitely one to watch in the future.

Hugh & Dan went on to the GP14 UK Nationals and finished 17th.

Thanks to Andy Bury and the GP14 International Class Assoc. for a brilliant set of pictures. Watch out for the dolphins!

IDRA14 sailors Alan Carr and crew Aoibhinn deBurca had a definitive win at the Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta 2009. Alan and Aoibhinn counted seven firsts, a second and third to win by a margin of seventeen points. Alan and Aoibhinn have certainly stamped their domination on this class as evidenced by their outright win with four firsts at the Northern Championships on Carlingford Lough in early June. Congratulations to deserved winners.

Also at The Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta Stephen Boyle took second place, crewing with Sean Craig, in the highly competitive SB3 fleet against 45 other entries.

Another unsung winner from Sutton Dinghy Club was Principal Race Officer Mr. Harry Gallagher who had responsibility for race management for the dinghy classes at The Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta 2009. Faced with many challenges from gathering gale force winds to time constraints Harry managed to run a full programme of ten races. "Truly outstanding - he deserves a gold medal" was how top IDRA14 racer Alan Carr described Harry's performance.
