Sutton Dinghy Club mourns the recent death of
Commdt. Muiris Walsh,

who was Commodore of the Club from 1965 to 1967.

Muiris began his sailing career in Sutton Creek, originally as a member of Kilbarrack Sailing Club - with three of his friends (Roy and Derek Dickson, and Peter Galton) he moved to Sutton Dinghy Club in 1957. These four built and raced Hornet dinghies in the Club, introducing Sutton crews to their unique "sliding seat" to get the weight outboard - Muiris raced No. 78 "Ciarog".He achieved the highest level of sailing in Ireland, winning the coveted "Helmsman Championship" trophy for Sutton in 1961. Always keen to try something new, in 1963 Muiris became one of the first Irish sailors to own and sail a Fireball, the fastest Class ever to race in Sutton!

When he joined the Dinghy Club, Muiris was an Army officer, involved in the Ordnance Survey - when this was set up as a Government service separate from the Army, Muiris became its first Director. He put his professional skills to good use in the Dinghy Club, working with the team who built the extension to the Boat Park which was completed in 1967.

Muiris moved on from Sutton to sail cruisers in Howth Yacht Club, continuing his successes, most recently in his White Sail Cruiser "Impressions". However, he never lost contact with his Sutton roots, watching with interest when the recent Boat Park expansion built on the work he put in 40 years previously.

The Committee and members of Sutton Dinghy Club extend their condolences to his family and friends.
