Sutton Dinghy Club Championing Inclusion: Building an Autism-Friendly Community on and off the Water

At Sutton Dinghy Club, we have always strived for community inclusion, ensuring that our sport and facilities are open and welcoming to everyone. We are extremely proud to be one of the earliest designated Autism Champions as members of the Howth Sutton Autism Friendly Community, having completed our in-person training in December 2024 in partnership with Ireland’s national autism charity, AsIAm.

Steps We Have Taken Toward Full Inclusion

To make our club as inclusive and accessible as possible, our team and volunteers have been trained on how to best support and cater to visitors and members with autism or other neurodivergence. We have a Sensory Map of the club, and we offer sensory kits including earplugs, sunglasses, and fidget toys.

Marking Autism Acceptance Month: Our April Open Day

This past April, to mark Autism Acceptance Month, we were thrilled to hold a dedicated Open Day for our neurodivergent community.

The day gave autistic children, teens, and adults a hands-on opportunity to get into a dinghy and experience the joy of being out on the water. Club members buddied up with participants to guide them through what was, for many, their very first sailing experience. It was an incredible day that opened up to new possibilities and gave participants the confidence to join our dinghy courses over the summer.

Shortlisted for the Pride of Place Award!

We are also excited to announce that Howth Sutton Autism Friendly Community has been nominated by Fingal County Council for the prestigious Pride of Place Award in the Inclusive Communities category.

This recognition highlights the incredible collaborative effort across our local area. Official judging takes place on Monday, 24th August, featuring a presentation at Howth Castle followed by a guided community tour highlighting key local organizations. Sutton Dinghy Club will feature on the official tour map.
