The first Irish National Mirror Championship took place in 1968 in Antrim, just 5 years after the introduction of the Mirror in the UK. It didn’t take too long for Sutton Dinghy Club to make its mark at National level in the Mirror. In 1973, David Dickson with his brother Alan, sailing Pink Panther (28988) took the Irish National Mirror Championship title in an event sailed in Lough Derg. Runner up was another Sutton sailor Brian Maguire.

Other Mirror sailors around Sutton Dinghy Club at the time included Paul Newport, Nick Spalding, Ian Malcom and a few juniors starting out were Colm Newport, David & Joan Mulligan.

David and Alan are sons of former Commodore of Sutton Dinghy Club and well known champion dinghy and keelboat racer Roy Dickson.

David now sails out of Lough Ree and has been a multiple Shannon One Design (SOD) National Champion. Later this month and 40 years after his Championship success, David’s son Tiarnan (LRYC) and his niece Sinead (SDC), will both compete in the 2013 Mirror Nationals and World Championships on Lough Derg later this month.
