Greystones Shane MacCarthy and Andy ‘Taxi’ Davis secured the GP14 World Championship title in Barbados late last night Irish time. A 2nd place finish in the penultimate race ahead of closest rival and holder of the title Ian Dobson from Great Britain meant that the Irish pair did not have to start the final race.
It was many hours before the official results came through but it capped a superb week at the end of a superb year for Greystones MacCarthy. In 2015 Shane won both the British and Irish GP14 National Championships and with a 22 boat Irish contingent in the Barbados fleet of 105 boats I am sure they partied well into the early hours. 
In a report to Afloat.ie in the early hours of this morning, Stephen Boyle, Vice-Commodore of Sutton Dinghy Club and President of The GP14 Class Association of Ireland said
‘This is a fantastic result for Irish dinghy sailing and the GP14 Class in particular. The GP14 World Championship epitomises what small boat racing is about; large scale participation, racing for all ages and levels, and razor sharp competition at the top end. We are absolutely delighted that Shane and Andy have brought the world title back to Ireland’.
John & Donal McGuinness (Moville SC) in 12th were next best Irish, followed by Lough Erne‘s JP & Carolyn McCaldin in 14th with Sligo YC Keith Louden & Alan Thompson in 20th. Sutton Dinghy Clubs own Alan Blay had to be content with 30th place.
