It was with great sadness that we heard of the passing yesterday of Audrey Dickson. Audrey was a long time member of Sutton Dinghy Club and former Committee member and Sailing Secretary.
With her husband Roy introducing the Fireball to Ireland and Sutton Dinghy Club in the early 60’s, Audrey was instrumental in getting the Fireball Class established in Ireland by leading the Class Association in its early days and encouraging Irish attendance at the Fireball World Championships.
In 1967 Audrey and Roy took the whole family to Bednar in France by ferry and road for the Fireball World Championships. With 4 Sutton Dinghy Club crews in total at the event, Roy (3rd) and former ISA President Dave Lovegrove (4th) the event provided probably Ireland first sailing World Championship podium finishes. Audreys input and organisation was a key part of making it happen at the time.
In the 70’s with sons David, Alan, Gary and Ian now getting involved in junior dinghy racing themselves, Audrey was to the fore in establishing the Junior sailing programme in Sutton Dinghy Club and particularly with the Mirrors. In 1973 sons David and Alan won the Mirror National Championships in Lough Derg and kick-started one of the most successful periods of junior dinghy racing in Sutton Dinghy Club.
In 2014, Audrey pictured above attended the Clubs 75th Gala Dinner and was a regular visitor in to the Club with her late husband Cecil Jermyn and particularly as part of her daily sea swim routine in Sutton Creek.
Our thoughts are with Ian, Susan, Sinead, Robert, Eoin, David, Alan, Gary, Roy and all the family at this time. Audrey Dickson RIP.
Audrey will repose at her home on Sunday afternoon from 2 o’clock until 4 o’clock – all are welcome. Funeral Service on Monday at 12.30 o’clock in Howth Presbyterian Church followed by Cremation at Glasnevin Crematorium.
