Day 2 saw Alan Carr carry on from Friday with 3 more race wins. With the strong winds the IDRA14 fleet raced inside the harbour with Water Wags and International Moths. 5 race wins fail to show that Alan is being pushed all the way by former National Champion Julie Alscoop.
It was also a decent day for the Sutton GP14 contingent but it could also have been a lot better. Race 1 saw Alan Blay & David Johnston make the most of some uncertainty about the trapezoidal course and take 1st from Ger Owens. Up and coming SDC Junior Peter Boyle and dad Stephen thought they had made a great start with 4th boat home, only to find out later the were OCS. Class Captain Katie Dwyer and Michelle Rowley were mid fleet with Hugh Gill, crewed by Alan Henry also OCS.
Race 2 saw all the Sutton boats to fore again with Hugh & Alan taking a great 4th, with Alan & David in 6th. Katie & Michelle were 17th. Peter Boyle didn’t let the OCS get to him and finished in 10th.
Race 3 saw Hugh & Alan take a 5th with Peter & Stephen improving again to take 9th. Alan & David were logged as 12th but there is likely to be some protests and redress throughout the day as they believed they had finished in top 5 or 6. Katie & Michelle completed 3 consistent results but felt they were very rusty and expected a far better second day.
At the end of Day 2 (Day 1 for GP14), Olympian & and current National Champion Ger Owens leads World Championship winning crew Andy Tunnicliffe. The McGuinness brother lie in 4th ahead of Alan Blay & David Johnston. But with discards to kick in after 3 races today, Hugh Gill is still very much in contention in Gold fleet with Katie Dwyer also expecting to push up to top of the silver fleet.
Considering the quality of the entries in the regattas largest fleet, Peter Boyle and dad Stephen are having a hell of a regatta and will certainly be ones to watch through the rest of the season. As I said results are provisional and there are likley to be further changes. Racing gets underway today around midday. Good luck to all the Sutton boats for Saturdays racing. Wind expected to increase through the day with plenty of rain later in the day.
