The weekend saw the conclusion of both the GP14 Leinsters and Mirror Nationals hosted here at Sutton Dinghy Club. Our IDRA14 sailors were on the road to Clontarf for the ‘2016 At Home’ event.
With some cracking racing over 2 days, the GP14 event saw our own Alan Blay and David Johnston Despite take 2nd overall from World Champion Shane MacCarthy and Damian Bracken.
This augurs well for the upcoming UK & Irish Nationals both held towards the end of August.
Thanks must got to PRO Scorie Walls who managed both fleets across the 3 days and despite some tricky conditions manged to get all races completed for both fleets. Class captain Katie Dwyer and Michelle Rowley had a super event as did youth sailor Peter Boyle crewed by Class President and dad Stephen. Check out the other excellent displays from our GP14 fleet in the full report.
There was to be no fairytale end for Conor Twohig in his penultimate Mirror event. With 2 race wins over the 3 days, last years runner-up Conor and Brian Sweeney struggled in the lighter conditions and despite lying in 2nd place going to the last day the pair had to settle for 4th overall.
Consistency across the 3 days saw Sligo YC’s Sarah White & Eoghan Duffy take the Championship from Lough Ree YC Caolan Croasdel & Peter Farrell with RCYC Rory & Oisin MacAllister taking 3rd. The event saw a disappointing turnout in what should have been a warm up for the Mirror European in in 2 weeks time in Royal Cork YC.
Also a big Thank You to SuperValu (Sutton) for there support over the 3 days.
With Sutton Dinghy Club fully occupied hosting the Mirror Nationals and the GP14 Leinster Championships, three of the Sutton IDRA 14s travelled to Clontarf Yacht & Boat Club for the annual “At Home” weekend – 2 races for the Regatta on Saturday, and the Sunbeam Cup race on Sunday.
In challenging conditions with shifty winds on Saturday, they did Sutton proud: Al Henry & Simon Revill in 14/134 swept the board with two straight wins in the Regatta, while Alan Carr & Dana Kilroy in 14/38 took third place. For the Sunday Sunbeam Cup, 14/38 was out of the running, so it was up to the two remaining Sutton boats to show their abilities in a race which started off fine but hit a vicious rain squall on the second round.
Despite the conditions, both stayed upright and led the fleet – Alan & Simon again took first place followed in second place by Charles Sargent & Caoimhe Fleming in 14/126.
