Last weekend saw the East Down YC host the GP14 Ulsters. Unfortunately only one Sutton boat competed with Peter Boyle crewed by father Stephen finishing an excellent 9th in a fleet of 22. The event was won by Shane MacCarthy/Damian Bracken from Keith Louden/Alan Thompson with John & Donal McGuinness finishing 3rd. Full report here on the gp14 Ireland site. The full results are on the East Down YC website.
Laura Thomson presented Damian Bracken with a new crew prize for the Ulsters donated by the Thomson family in recognition of Andy Thomson exploits in both GP14 and other classes.
The next event on the GP14 calendar is the GP14 Leinster Championship and is hosted here in Sutton Dinghy Club on 23-24th July.
Last weekend saw the IDRA14 fleet continue their 70th celebrations with the Clontarf YBC Open Championship. The event also saw the official launch of the new IDRA 14/166 Wicked Sadie. The event was won by Alan Carr/Dana Kilroy who added this event to their King of the Bay victory a few weeks ago. Full report to follow.
As mentioned earlier the GP14 Leinster Championship will be held in Sutton in July. The event is being held and run in parallel with the 2016 Mirror Nationals. It is 30 years since Sutton Dinghy Club hosted the Nationals. 1986 was the year, the event took place around Hurricane Charlie and also produced a Sutton winner in Roger Morris. While the Mirror fleet is not the same force it was back in the days of Dan O’Grady, Roger Morris, Brian Jennings, Shane O’Grady the title will still be eagerly sailed for with a couple of our own sailors including Conor Twohig/Brian Sheehy and Oscar Langan/Lughaidh Croasdel hoping to be in the mix at the end.
