The Irish University sailing scene is a very active one with team racing the primary discipline for the majority of student sailors. For the 2016/17 season, Sutton Dinghy Clubs Dan Gill takes over as Captain of Trinity Sailing with the Annual Colours match this weekend (April 2nd) with UCD a major goal. In addition Dan has been selected on the Trinity Sailing team representing Ireland at the 2016 Laser Perfomance Collegiate Series set for Lake Garda in August.
Dan, son of former GP14 National Champion Hugh Gill and a second year Engineering student, was part of the Trinity team that finished runners-up to UCD in the Inter Varsities earlier this month in Kilrush. Next season Dan will also be attempting to steer Trinity Sailing to qualification as the Irish representatives for the next ISAF Student Yachting World Championship (SYWoC) event. Back in 1989 Trinity Sailing took 3rd place behind Lund (Sweden) and Edinburgh (Scotland) in SYWoC with Dan O’Grady, Roger Morris and Andy Johnston part of the College team.
This is not the first time a Sutton Dinghy Club sailor has held this important role with at least 3 former Trinity Sailing captains emerging from Sutton including Davy Carr (2008), Murrough Kavanagh (1995) and current ISA President David Lovegrove back in 1967.
