The IDRA14 Nationals got started in Lough Ree Yacht Club yesterday with a good Sutton Dinghy Club representation among the 18 crews. SDC’s former National Champions Alan Carr/ Ian McCormack and Alan Henry/Simon Revill were joined by 3 other SDC crews Charles Sargent/John Lynch, Gordan Kelly/Mark Masterson and Jim Lambkin/Wendy Rudd.

In wet and blustery conditions 2 races were sailed, with Sutton Dinghy Club crews occupying top 3 positions.  Both Alan Carr and Alan Henry had a 1st and 2nd each with Jim Lambkin lying in 3rd overall after a 6th and a 3rd in yesterdays races. With a poor forecast for Saturday, word from Lough Ree is that they may attempt to complete 3 races today.

Over in Dun Laoghaire the Optimist Nationals got underway with Rory McEvoy, Oscar Langan and Shane O’Brien in Senior Silver fleet with Dylan McEvoy in the Regatta fleet.

Torrential rain during first race resulted in drop off in wind and tide became a major factor causing number of competitors to finish outside time limit. Second race was completed in very light flukey conditions. Shane had a decent day with a couple of placings in the 30’s and lies in 38th position. In their first major regatta outing both Oscar and Rory struggled with the conditions but Friday promises to be a far better day. Dylan completed 3 races and lies 24th with his best result a 19th. Thanks to Aidan Tarbett Photography and The Jelly Bean Factory for shots of our Optimist competitors.
