The Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta got underway yesterday with Alan Carr and Charles Sargent in their IDRA14’s representing Sutton Dinghy Club in this the first of 4 days of racing. With a 1st and 2nd Alan Carr is joint leader heading into todays racing.
The Club is also providing one of the Committee boats for the 7 fleets in what is now Ireland’s largest sailing event with over 400 boats and well over 1000 sailors in 33 classes of keelboats and dinghies. The Saoirse is being manned by Billy Bebbington and former Commodore Padraic Boyle for the 4 day event. Harry Gallagher will also be PRO on one of the 7 fleets throughout the series.
Today sees the GP14 fleet enter the fray, with Sutton Dinghy Club well represented with 4 crews including Alan Blay/ David Johnston, Hugh Gill/Alan Henry, Class Captain Katie Dwyer and Michelle Rowley. Up and coming youngster Peter Boyle, crewed by his father Stephen complete the Sutton entry.
With 36 boats entered the GP14 is the largest class in the regatta and the GP14 Leinster Championships is also up for grabs. The GP14, arguably Ireland’s most popular racing dinghy with a hugely competitive fleet should deliver some spectacular sailing in the Bay over the next 3 days.
